Grade Level:
9
Subject:
Language Arts
Goal Summary:
Students should be better able to analyze literature by the end of this unit. In particular, students should be able to parse how different literary techniques contribute to the meaning of a work.
Skill Goals:
Students should be able to:
1. Identify the perspective of the narrator (e.g. first person, third person omniscient, etc.)
2. Assess how the meaning of a text may be different based on the perspective of the narrator
3. Identify simile/metaphor when used
4. Assess how a simile/metaphor adds to meaning of a text
5. Follow symbolism used throughout a text, and identify when a symbol that has been introduced previously should be revisited
6. Analyze symbols used for information that may not be conveyed directly
7. Write effectively about 1-6 above
Reflection:
Results on the 'Figurative Language Quiz' showed some students were still learning this topic. To give these students some extra practice, I modified the 'Writing Techniques' lesson to focus on writing about the effects of different metaphors.
