My New Unit

Grade Level:
9
Subject:
Biology Honors
Start Date:
End Date:
Goal Summary:
Students will have a clear understanding Ecology/Ecosystems energy transfer
Essential Questions:
- How do organisms depend on each other and their environment to survive in an ecosystem?
■- How do living things differ in the methods they use to obtain energy?
■- What feeding relationships in a food web contributed to the last meal you ate?
■- How does nature keep recycling earth’s matter?
■- How do organisms interact with each other in an ecosystem?
■-How do environmental conditions effect successional changes in ecosystems?
■-How do human activities influence & modify the environment?
Content Goals:
Students will assess the dependence of all organisms on one another and the flow of energy and matter within their ecosystems.
a. Investigate the relationships among organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, and biomes.
b. Explain the flow of matter and energy through ecosystems by: 1) Arranging components of a food chain according to energy flow. 2) Comparing the quantity of energy in the
steps of an energy pyramid. 3) Explaining the need for cycling of major nutrients (C, O, H, N, P).
c. Relate environmental conditions to successional changes in ecosystems.
d. Assess & explain human activities that influence & modify the environment such as global warming, population growth, pesticide use, & water and power consumption.
e. Relate plant adaptations, including tropisms, to the ability to survive stressful environmental conditions.
f. Relate animal adaptations, including behaviors, to the ability to survive stressful environmental conditions.
