Exploring Special Triangles

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
Math
Start Date:
End Date:
Goal Summary:
The Thematic Unit is part of a math unit designed to teach the students about Right triangles and special triangles. The thematic topic, xxx, fits in well with the content area because the concepts utilized in the thematic area are directly applicable to this unit
Standards Met:
IDs Only
Detail
Essential Questions:
What can the Pythagorean Theorem be used for? What are its limitations?
Why are triangles important in geometry?
How do we make complicated geometry problems more straightforward using trigonometry?
Understandings:
As part of this unit the students will learn about
1. Pythagorean Theorem
2. Congruence, Similarity of triangles
3. Special Triangles
4. Trigonometric Ratios
5. The Unit Circle
6. Law of Sines, Law of cosines
Content Goals:
Click to enter your content goals. These comprise the raw information that students should know at the end of the unit.
Skill Goals:
Students will be able to
1) prove the Pythagorean Theorem using the unit circle and discuss orally and/or in writing how the Pythagorean Theorem can be applied to other similar types of problems.
2) use congruence and similarity in triangles to solve geometry problems and demonstrate how use of congruence and similarity can be used to break down problems that then be solved using more straight forward means. This ability demonstrates xxx and yyy which are literacy goals of this unit.
3) will be able to use and prove the law of sines and the law of cosines again demonstrating their ability to simplify complicated problems. The final objective may be challenging for some students so we will encourage peer tutoring and provide incremental challenges for all students
