Writing for Results in Six, Two Hour Sessions

Subject:
Social Studies
Start Date:
End Date:
Goal Summary:
Students will learn how to write clean, compelling prose, whether about people or places, science and technology, business, sports, the arts, or family history.
Understandings:
Students should learn:

THAT THERE IS GENIUS IN EVERYONE
THAT THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO DEVELOP A VOICE
THAT WE DON'T GIVE CRITICISM UNLESS SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR - AND EVEN THEN IT IS BALANCED -

that writing is a craft learned by writing and more writing
that writing is a powerful tool for getting results
that writing is a craft requiring discipline
that business communication skills can make the difference in any career
that telling one's life story can be paralyzing because the task feels so huge
that rewriting, not writing is the key to success
that writing fluently doesn't mean they are writing well
that it's important to avoid using the cliches found everywhere in mass media today
that a subject (the Civil War) is not the same thing as a story (Gone with the Wind)
that achieving simplicity is not easy
Content Goals:
To develop confidence in one's own voice to communicate with employers and others
To learn to write and then rewrite
To learn to recognize "parts" within oneself that may interfere with writing: critical parts, hopeless parts, etc
Writing effective proposals, resumes, thank you notes
To identify nonfiction writing that appeals to the individual student
To have read and discussed "On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction" by William Zinsser (Collins | 30th Anniversary Edition)
To write outlines and multiple drafts of short pieces, resulting in one finished piece
Skill Goals:
To learn how to organize information
To learn to pare away cliches and clutter
To learn to read critically
To learn to rewrite
To identify the possible results and outcomes of what they - the students - write.
