Goal Summary:
The goals of this unit are to explore word relationships by learning the concept of synonym and antonym as well as learn the meanings of the prefixes pre-, dis-, un-, in-, im and suffixes --able, --ability, -ible, --iblility. Students will enhance dictionary skills by using reference books or online sources to locate and learn meanings and variants of target words. Students will understand the function of prefixes and suffixes.

Essential Questions:
Lesson 1--When a word has multiple meanings, how do we decide which meaning
is best for what we are reading or writing?

Lesson 2- Why would the ability to use a word that means the same or has similar meaning to a word be important to a writer?

Lesson 3- How can learning antonyms for words broaden our understanding of topics and concepts? How can antonyms help us with expressing ourselves?

Lesson 4- How do prefixes effect the meaning of a base word? Can they have more than one meaning?

Lesson 5--Can suffixes change the part of speech or spelling of a word? What happens if a word ending in --ing is changed and now ends in ---able?
Skill Goals:
1. Using all 8 words, Complete Target Words chart telling WIK (what I know), Dictionary Definition,
and Example of the word used in the text.
2. Complete synonym word webs for each target words. Become familiar with at least 3 synonyms for each target word.
3. Complete an antonym word wheel for each target word. Become familiar with at least 3 antonyms for each target word.
4. Be able to use the dictionary or thesaurus to find synonyms or antonyms for any given word even when there are none listed in the entry for the word you are seeking.
5. Complete a prefixes chart containing many words from the unit reading on which the students have to supply the prefix and the base word then write the meaning of the complete word. Students will have to evaluate the meaning of the base word and synthesis info in order to write the meaning that takes place when the prefix and base word are combined. Some words have suffixes as well which contribute to the part of speech and meaning of the base word.
Reflection:
Students will complete a learning scale at the end of each lesson. Students will complete a learning scale at the end of the unit to chart their progress.
