Students will gain the overall basic knowledge needed to care for the patient with fluid and electrolyte needs, using the nursing process to identify, describe, and prioritize information related to the patient with fluid and electrolyte needs, including describing medications related to the adult medical surgical patient with fluid and electrolyte needs. They will learn prevention strategies related to the care of adult medical-surgical patients with fluid and electrolyte needs. They will also learn teaching strategies and communication techniques to use when caring for the adult medical-surgical patient with fluid and electrolyte needs.
Essential Questions:
1. Review risk factors for fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances and nursing assessment questions for these areas.
2. Discuss daily weights and fluid intake and output measurement and the focused assessment in Table 41-10.
3. Discuss lab values and possible nursing diagnoses for patients with fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base alterations.
4. Discuss planning specific and measurable goals for different nursing diagnoses. 5. Discuss replacement of enteral and parenteral fluids, types of solutions used, and the insertion and maintenance of IVs and IV therapy. Review when fluids would be restricted.
6. Discuss vascular access devices and the protection of skin and veins during IV therapy. Cover prevention of complications at peripheral IV sites.
7. Discuss how the evaluation and reevaluation of a patient'€™s clinical status is important when treating fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
