Goal Summary:
Students will gain the overall basic knowledge necessary for safe medication administration to patients with diverse needs. Students will learn how to use the nursing process to make decisions while administering medications. They will also learn teaching strategies and communication techniques to use when administering medications to patients.
Essential Questions:
1. What are nurses responsibilities with respect to medications?
2. Discuss the five œrights€ of medication administration.
Discuss the patient€™s rights that evolve from the potential risks of medication.
3. What factors in the nursing history are relevant to medication administration? What are some nursing assessment questions pertinent to medication administration? What are some examples of goals and outcomes for patient understanding and behaviors about medication? What special circumstances apply to medication administration to children and older adults?
4. What steps can be taken to prevent aspiration during medication administration?
5. Ask students how they would identify a client if the client is unable to respond.
6. Ask students to describe how they take medications at home and/or how they would give a family member a medication. Ask students to describe how drugs are administered by nurses to clients in health care settings. Compare and contrast how these methods differ and how they are the same.
