Students will gain the overall basic knowledge related to the nurses role in taking vital signs, using the nursing process to identify, describe, and prioritize information related to taking vital signs. They will also learn teaching strategies and communication techniques to use when taking vital signs on the adult med-surg patient.
Essential Questions:
1. What can the four main vital signs (temp, RR, HR, BP) signal about a patient's health?
2. How to prioritize using ABC, safety, pain.
3. When do you take vital signs?
4. What is the purpose of establishing a baseline of vital signs?
5. What interventions may be implemented because of altered vital signs? Include potential nursing diagnoses and delegation considerations.
6. What are four characteristics of the pulse and what do they signify? (Discuss, rate, rhythm, strength, and equality.)
7. How do the acceptable ranges of respiratory rate change over the life span? Discuss the mechanics of breathing.
