Subject:
Safety-Infection Control
Start Date:
End Date:
Goal Summary:
Students will gain the overall basic knowledge needed to care for patients with infections or at risk for infections, using the nursing process to identify, describe, and prioritize information related to infection prevention. They will learn information to help prevent transmission of pathogens and communication techniques to prevent and control infection in adult med-surg patients.
Essential Questions:
1. What factors place a patient in a health care setting at risk for infections? (Discuss lowered resistance, increased exposure, and invasive procedures.)
2. What sites are vulnerable to HAIs and why? (See Box 28-3.)
3. How do chronic diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis affect the risk of infection?
4. What are some questions directed at assessing risk for infection?
Content Goals:
1. Explain the knowledge necessary for preventing and controlling infection in adult med-surg patients.

2. Describe assessment techniques to identify adult med-surg patients at risk for developing an infection.

3. Explain how to use the nursing process as a clinical decision-making strategy to prevent and control infection in adult med-surg patients.

4. Describe and prioritize caring interventions used to break the chain of infection.

5. Describe prevention strategies for limiting the transfer of pathogens.

6. Practice communication techniques used to facilitate the prevention and control of infection in adult med-surg patients.

7. Identify teaching strategies used to facilitate the prevention and control of infection in adult med-surg patients.

8. Identify professional nursing behaviors in the clinical setting applicable to the care of adult med-surg patients with infections.
