Goal Summary:
Students will be able to distinguish basics between computer hardware and software, and understand the role electricity plays in powering computers and reading software. Students will be recognize the internet as a software program and utilize this resource to search for more information about different kinds of information.
Essential Questions:
How does hardware appear and work differently than software? What does the function of each tell us about how electricity is used? How is the motherboard in a computer similar to a human brain? How can facts and questions help us formulate better searches for information we seek?
Understandings:
Students should understand that electricity is required to power on electronics (either via outlet or battery).
Students should understand the basic idea of metal as a conductor and plastic as an insulator of electricity.
Content Goals:
Comprehensive understanding about computer parts and the way they work.
Skill Goals:
Research and Communication Skills 2.00-2.04; Review skills from previous grades, Internet Navigation, Explain Internet/Computer care and caution, Peruse Electronic Encyclopedias, Use Find/Search Tool in electronic encyclopedia with teacher directed topics.
Public Notes:
The long gap between the start and finish of this unit is because each class only comes to the computer lab once a week, and one week was lost to a snow day.
