Living systems transition into predictable altering patterns. The butterfly is a part of a group of insects called Lepidoptera that has a predictable growth cycle that can be observed by children starting with the egg, the caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally a blooming beautiful butterfly. This thematic unit engages children to make artistic drawings of metamorphosis of a caterpillar by drawings, dramatizations, and observations of the life development of the caterpillar.
