What's the Story...
And Who's Feeling the Impact?

Grade Level:
12
Subject:
SBI4U_Biology (University Prep)
Topic:
Molecular Genetics; Pedigrees; Sex-link-traits; and Ethics in biotech.

Overall Expectation: D1 / Specific Expectation: D1.1 - considering elements of selective-breeding, hereditary diseases/disorders/physical traits, and the
social, ethical, and legal implications of biotechnology (OME, 2008, p.82)
**Can also be used within SNC4M (specific expectations: F3.1 use of biotechnology for selective breeding)... (OME, 2008, p.237)**
Objective:
Understanding the concepts behind pedigrees and sex-linked traits utilizing a more storied approach. Exploring the impacts (both negative and positive) of biotechnology. Working on scientific communication skills - learning to speak using appropriate scientific terminology and making salient, respectful arguments in terms of a scientific debate.

- In a previous class, students will have gone through an activity where they looked at the occurrence of Hemophilia that ran through the British Monarchy (see "Hemophilia: “The Royal Disease”" - attached).

- In this class students will either choose a current news article or write a fictitious story that demonstrates a potential for a cascading of a hereditary trait throughout a family.

- Students will further be asked to consider the potential for bio-technology to 'prevent' this from happening and the ethical ramifications therein.
