What Are Cookies? Cookies are tiny pieces of information that your browser adds to a special folder on your computer to let certain websites recognize you as you move from page to page within the website, most commonly used to remember login or shopping cart info. The Lesson Builder uses a session cookie to remember you as you browse the website, so that new lessons you create are added to your library and so that your searches can differentiate between your lessons and other teachers' lessons. You can still view lessons without cookies enabled. A small percent of web users choose to disable cookies since some cookies (especially third-party cookies) are used by advertisers to track browsing behavior on other websites. The Lesson Builder doesn't do that.
How Can I Enable First Party Cookies? It varies from browser to browser. Look for an 'options', 'settings', or 'tools' selection on your browser, or perform a web search for how to do it for your specific browser. You can choose to enable all cookies, enable only first party cookies, or add an exception to allow cookies from thelessonbuilder.org.
How Can I Know It's Fixed? When you think you have enabled cookies for this site, refresh the page and this message should disappear. If you still see this message after refreshing the page, cookies are still disabled for this site.

KRISTINA & VICTORIA
Grade Level:
9
Subject:
Chemistry
Topic:
Consumerism
Objective:
The goal of today’s activity is to explore aspects of youth consumerism such as branding and our desire to have particular items of clothing and accessories. We will also touch upon how our desire for particular items impacts our lives - how long and how much money do you have to make to buy these items, and how does the way in which we carry out our daily activities and the way we live our lives impact our earth and the resources which we pull from it (known as our ecological footprint).
This lesson has been designed as the introductory lesson to grade 9 chemistry. Prior to grade 9 chemistry, students will have limited knowledge and understanding of elements, the periodic table and atoms. The purpose of this lesson and it's layout is to use the big picture, and they ways in which we live our lives to get students thinking about how everything they do, from driving a car, to buying their 20th pair of shoes to throwing a plastic bottle into the garbage can rather than recycling bin has an impact and a consequence. While we do not go into the nitty-gritty of these concepts (which can be further explained in chemistry and the earth science strands) we hope that students come to realize that for every action there is a reaction. The lesson also touches upon youth's lifestyle and their urge to possess more, or choose items based on a name they carry. While they do look at items and compare the items in one activity, they will begin to think of the materials used to make those items, the energy required and the resources pulled from the earth. We have incorporated themes from both Schor (2001) and Reis, Mueller & Gisewhite (in press).
