Decomposing and Composing with Grams

Grade Level:
3
Subject:
Math
Topic:
Decompose and compose a kilogram
Objective:
Standard: 3.MD.1.2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units.
Objective: Build and decompose a kilogram to reason about the size and weight of 1 kilogram, 10 grams, and 1 gram.
Prep:
Make (5) 1 kilogram bags of rice
Make (10) 1 gram bags of rice
Make (10) 10 gram bags of rice
Make (10) 100 gram bags of rice
Set up stations for students to create and balance different amounts of rice with th e understanding they need to show equal amounts.. Example: (10) 1 gram bags = 10 grams and so on. Allow students to use each station ultimately ending up at the (10) 100 grams = 1 kilogram station to answer the question. Have students draw the bags with the amounts listed and then create a math comparison to show the answer with a written explanation.
Materials:
rice, Ziplock baggies, 4 balance scales
