The Double - By Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Objective:
In this lesson plan, students will have previously read the book "The Double" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Mental illness and social rejection are a common theme is this book. Although the setting and location is different from modern day America, connections of self-judgement and feelings of isolation can be made. In today's lesson, each student will be addressing this from their own unique standpoint. Each student will write a one to two paged analysis on the topic of relating The Double to today's society. In this response students will include, how they think self image affects personal performance/confidence, how this is prominent in today's society (especially in terms of high school), how this is shown in The Double (using specific examples from the book), and how the two can connect to one another.

Keep these questions in mind while writing your analysis:
-How does your personal achievement rate compare from when you think you may fail to when you are confident in your ability?
-Does social rejection often times have an affect on your overall lifestyle and life choices you make?
-Would the outcome of The Double have ended differently had Golyadkin felt included socially and mentally?
-How are Golyadkin's reactions similar and different to those of modern day secluded people?

Reflection:
To end the lesson student's will be divided into small groups of four to five people to discuss the topic and what they wrote. Each student will share with their classmates a portion of their choosing from their paper and read it to their group. Within the groups, students will discuss what they addressed, what they think, and why they think that. They also will share with each other what they have learned and how their perspectives have changed.
