Understanding American History through Poetry.
Objective:
Students will understand the American experience through the voice of Langston Hughes. Students will read the poem, "I, Too," and compare the themes expressed with that of Walt Whitman's poem, "I Hear America Singing." Students will identify the metaphors used in Hughes poem and explain their meanings. They will create a collage that visualizes America as expressed in both poems. Students will read another poem, "Let America be America" and decide whether the details vividly captures the struggles of Black Americans. To complete this week's lesson, students will find three poems that highlight the progress of America and students will prepare a presentation that explains the meaning of each poem.
