Students will gain an understanding about the issues of racism and discrimination which inspired the Civil Rights Movement of 1960's. Students will consider how teenagers in the 1960's had very different concerns compared with today's teenagers.

Is it possible that prejudice and discrimination can be over-come by direct interactions between people of different backgrounds through education and socilization?
Understandings:
SWBAT empathize with African American children of the early 1960's, analyze the effect of racism and discrimination on their childhood, and understand how deeply rooted prejudices separated the country in the 1960's, and how various events lead to the Civil Rights Movement and eventually change.
Skill Goals:
Using daily journaling students will develop effective communication skills that will enhance their writing abilities and increase comprehension skills.
