TOPIC 2-MECHANICS-FRICTION

Friction

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
Science
Start Date:
End Date:
Goal Summary:
To explain friction and how components adjust the amount of friction
Standards Met:
IDs Only
Detail
Essential Questions:
I. How would you feel running a 100m on a track? How would that differ if you had to run a 100m on ice?
II. How easy is it to start pushing a car in neutral? How would your effort change once you get it going?
III. How hard is it to push a refrigerator? How would it differ if you had to push it up a hill?
Understandings:
The ratio b/w the force necessary to move 1 surface horizontally over another & pressure b/w 2 surfaces.
Static means still or at rest & Kinetic means moving
Then coefficient of friction will change from static to kinetic
Content Goals:
Students should know the difference in friction between static and kinetic systems, how difference surfaces changes friction & how angles affect friction.
Skill Goals:
Students will be able to mathematically calculate frictional force, identify coefficients of friction and the normal force.
Other Information:
LAB: friction lab will reinforce that conceptual with the applied physics.
Reflection:
Click to enter. Your reflection should be entered as you progress through and complete your unit. Evaluating what worked well and what could be improved will further your professional development, and help any teachers looking to build off your unit.
