Understandings:
This chapter 34 focuses on the care of patients who are critically ill from respiratory problems.
Pulmonary embolism requires immediate identification by the nurse and must often be based on symptomatology that the patient exhibits.
Discuss the management of anticlotting therapy, including laboratory monitoring for these patients, to decrease further respiratory compromise.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This chapter 32 focuses on the care of patients with noninfectious lower respiratory problems.
There are many similarities between the disorders presented, especially in regard to pathophysiology, resultant clinical manifestations, and findings from diagnostic tests.
Presenting these as a group of symptoms and findings common to all noninfectious respiratory problems may help students make better application of the material across the wide range of disorders.
It is important to remind students that disorders affecting breathing are not only life-threatening but cause anxiety and fear in patients.
Viewing the patient holistically and emphasizing clinical decision-making and problem-solving can help make the knowledge gained from this chapter foundational to patient care
