NUR 214 F 1: Orient, Oxygen. Review, Pulm. Edema, Lung Dis Intro

Subject:
Day 1
Goal Summary:
Clients with oxygenation needs: (1) Implement caring interventions in response to their diverse needs and inherent value; (2) Assess adaptation to internal and external changes; (3) Implement individualized prevention strategies; (4) Apply the nursing process while providing comprehensive, collaborative care; (5) Demonstrate effective communication including information technologies; (6) Demonstrate professional behaviors consistent with the nursing profession; (7) Use appropriate teaching strategies in providing health education; (8) Participate in self-directed learning through researching and planning appropriate nursing care.
Essential Questions:
5. Nursing Management of Care (section applicable to DAY 1 are listed)
A. Safe and Effective Care Environment
i. No open flames or combustibles in rooms utilizing oxygen
B. Health Promotion and Maintenance
i. Teach persons about effects of smoking on pulmonary function
ii. Encourage those over 50 or with respiratory problems to receive influenza vaccination yearly.
C. Psychosocial considerations
i. Assess effect of respiratory problem on patient’s ADLs, work, and leisure life
ii. Explain all procedures, restrictions, and follow up requirements to patients having tests
D. Physiologic Integrity
i. Immediately report alterations in respiratory status; assess breathing effectiveness in those with SOB or altered mental status
ii. Application of oxygen to any hypoxic patient
iii. Pre & post procedural and operative management
v. Use laboratory data and clinical manifestations to evaluate the adequacy of oxygenation and ventilatory interventions- prioritize
Understandings:
This chapter 29 focuses on the assessment of the respiratory system.
Briefly review the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and the changes associated with the aging process.
Throughout the lesson, focus on the risks associated with smoking and other environmental factors.
Walk students through diagnostic tests and nursing assessments used to evaluate respiratory function.
Review patient teaching and pre- and post-examination nursing care.

Ch 13 F & E
This chapter focuses on the ranges of fluids and electrolytes that are in constant flux to keep the body in homeostasis.
To keep conditions as close to normal as possible, the body has many control mechanisms to prevent dangerous changes.
Prior review of anatomy and physiology may be helpful in teaching the mechanisms of fluid transport and maintenance.
Students should understand each electrolyte with respect to the body having too much (hyper) or too little (hypo) of each.
Highlight the nursing assessments and care with each electrolyte problem, with particular attention to some of the special considerations for older adults experiencing these problems.
It is important for students to understand the team (physician, nutritionist) that collaborate with the nurse to treat these problems.

This chapter 32 focuses on the care of patients with noninfectious lower respiratory problems.
There are many similarities between the disorders presented, especially in regard to pathophysiology, resultant clinical manifestations, and findings from diagnostic tests.
Presenting these as a group of symptoms and findings common to all noninfectious respiratory problems may help students make better application of the material across the wide range of disorders.
It is important to remind students that disorders affecting breathing are not only life-threatening but cause anxiety and fear in patients.
Viewing the patient holistically and emphasizing clinical decision-making and problem-solving can help make the knowledge gained from this chapter foundational to patient care
Reflection:
Fluid Overload is key word in Iggy text. Pulmonary is JUST ONE AREA AFFECTED. Just and BRIEF OVERVIEW as with HF we will talk about Pulm Edema a great deal r/t that process. Ch. 13 is Fluid/Electrolyte section and SHOULD BE REVIEW. Hit highlights of what patient looks like and common interventions- drugs, positioning, etc.
Ch. 28 note in text-burns discusses fluid shifts and pulmonary along with many other chapters.
