2. Assess how the meaning of a math symbol (parentheses, operational symbols for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) verifies understanding of how to use symbols in solving math word problems
3. Identify units of measure in solving word problems.
4. Assess how a diagram, chart, drawing a picture, working backwards, guess and check /adds to steps in solving a math problem.
5. Follow content and context in word problems to comprehensively eliminate unnecessary details in word problems.
6. Analyze symbols used for information that may not be conveyed directly.
7. Write effectively about 1-6 above
Reflection:
"Explaining how to Add" students will write a paragraph using math transition words such as first, next, then, and finally when describing how to answer a word problem. Introduce activity that reflects prior knowledge on adding whole numbers. Give students a price list for 5 items; specify that they are going to purchase two items for a friend's birthday. Inform them that they are limited to spending no more than fifteen dollars.
Test estimation skills by having the students point out what two items that could not be purchased at the same time.
For a writing extension, have students explain how they chose their items using math vocabulary......sum, difference, in all, total, and select.
Using a number line requires the skills of recognizing the direction of increase and decrease of number values on a number line regardless of display of whole numbers, fractions, or decimals. Tailor this activity for students to pinpoint and identify specific values on a number line.
Predictions on the 'Coordinates for Thanksgiving Graphs' will indicate that some students are still learning this topic. To give these students some extra practice, I will modified the 'coordinate plane' lesson to focus on plotting points directly as x-y axis are displayed.
