In English II Honors, students will be challenged by concepts and ideas from texts of high complexity. They will develop an advance understanding of literary texts from American, British, and World Literature and will integrate the skills from these studies into reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, they will gain critical thinking and communication skills, which will help them in real-life decision-making and interaction. With this in mind, students will acquire greater knowledge and appreciation not only for the English language but also for Language in general. Lastly, students will learn to be more understanding and empathetic towards other people.

Goal Summary:
Students will learn to read short stories for two major reasons; pleasure and insight. The first deals with reading a story for personal enjoyment and the later to understand the truth about the human condition and about the realities of life. With this in mind, students will acquire knowledge of a wide variety of short stories, of the English Language, and skills in reading and writing.

Essential Questions:
Why are short stories important to readers? How do the Elements of Literature (plot, characterization, theme, symbol, mood, setting, etc) help the reader understand the meaning of the story? How does the language (words, phrases, sentences, etc) of the story help bring forth its meaning? How can short stories help with improving one's own language and expressing one's thoughts in writing?
Content Goals:
Towards the end of the unit, students should know and understand the significance of each short story read in class. Students should also know and understand the Elements of Literature. Lastly, students should know how to use the English Language within their own writings.
Skill Goals:
Students will be able to:
1. Identify important passages and discern the significance of such passages within a text.
2. Apply the knowledge of the English Language acquired from the texts into one's own writings.
3. Possess a better understanding of the English Language, both in Grammar and Composition.
4. Develop more efficient reading habits and writing skills.
5. Develop critical thinking skills of providing textual evidence for an text analysis and generating ideas for a paper.
