My New Unit

Subject:
Humanities 10
Content Goals:
Each of my three sophomore Humanities classes was given the task of producing a short 5-10 minute film using one or more scenes from the play "Othello."
Skill Goals:
Students were given various production assignments including acting, directing, editing, prop and set design, sound and music design, poster design, camera operation and film title design.
Reflection:
The process of producing a short film in each class took more time than I anticipated. Many students did not perform their tasks (i.e. gathering costumes, practicing their scenes, planning the filming process itself, etc.).

As a result of many students' failure to take their assignments seriously, I began to assist with the production by trying to help them focus on specific aspects of the production so that filming could begin. I assisted them with some of the simple tasks like making copies of the scripts and finding visual backdrops for film scenes. I also had to monitor students closely so they would not lose focus on what they were suppose to be doing in their specific production groups.

Overall, I feel students learned a lot about the film making process and gained more of an understanding of the play because of this project.

On the negative side, just as we were ready to complete the filming process, someone accidentally wiped out (from the video camera) all of the scenes from 2 of 3 class films. Needless to say, the students and I were extremely disappointed.

We did however salvage class period one's film clips and they were able to put together their film. We viewed the film and the film revealed many of the technological challenges of making a movie. However, my students learned the importance of working together and the difficulty of working on a group project when not everyone is fully committed.

I learned that it is best to back up every production scene whenever you finish filming it. Given the outcome of the project, I feel that this might project would be better suited for an honors class or a senior humanities class.
