Goal Summary:
Through communication and collaboration, learners will understand that as contributing members of our community we have a shared responsibility to protect and respect our world building upon the learning in the previous unit.
Writers will understand that a topic or opinion must be supported with facts and/or details. They will create opinion pieces where they support their opinion with a reason. Writers will also use facts they have learned to share information about a chosen topic. With guidance and support from adults and peers, learners will work through the writing process and add details to strengthen their writing, as needed, exploring a variety of digital tools to produce and publish their pieces.
To support writing, readers will understand that authors use illustrations and key details to convey their main topic or central message in a text. They will read texts to find details that support their understanding of the central message or main topic.
Foundationally, learners will distinguish between long and short vowel sounds in spoken single- syllable words. Additionally, learners will know the spelling- sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs and blends and will decode regularly spelled one-syllable words. They will also read words will inflectional endings. Learners should recognize and read irregularly spelled words (power words). Instruction in power words should continue to be embedded throughout the year and progress based on student needs.
