Students will gain the overall basic knowledge necessary for safe intravenous medication administration to patients with diverse needs. Students will learn how to use the nursing process to make decisions while administering intravenous medications. They will also learn teaching strategies and communication techniques to use when administering intravenous medications to patients.
Essential Questions:
1. What are the considerations when choosing a vascular access device (VAD)?
2. What should a nurse teach the patient about the PICC? How long can this device remain in place?
3. How does the nurse prevent air from entering when completing a central line dressing change?
4. Compare the various types of solution containers, and list the advantages and disadvantages of each.
5. Identify common complications of IV therapy and how they can be prevented.
6. Discuss continuous and intermittent IV administrations.
