Students will gain the overall basic knowledge needed to care for patients with skin integrity needs, using the nursing process to identify, describe, and prioritize information related to skin integrity needs, including describing medications related to the oxygenation needs of adult patients. They will learn prevention strategies related to the skin integrity needs of adult med-surg patients. They will also learn teaching strategies and communication techniques to use when caring for the adult med-surg patient with skin integrity needs.
Essential Questions:
1. What are the different types of wound drainage and what does each indicate? How will you remember to check for changes in skin integrity in your patients?
2. What are the economic consequences of pressure ulcers? What is the psychosocial impact of wounds?
3. Discuss nursing assessment questions that focus on level of sensation, movement, and continence status.
4. Discuss that compromised skin integrity allows pathogens to enter the body.
5. Review healing by primary and secondary intention
6. Explain the factors involved in preventing pressure ulcers; discuss positioning and support surfaces.
