Diffusion Rate Lab Lesson

Grade Level:
9
Subject:
Biology
Topic:
Diffusion Rate
Objective:
Measurable Goals:
Understand how the process of diffusion occurs in cells.
Apply the concept of homeostasis to the process of diffusion.
Understand how the surface area-to-volume ratio of a cell affects diffusion of materials into that cell.
Conduct an experiment, and gather and analyze data.
Other Information:
Big Idea for This Lesson Various transport mechanisms—diffusion, osmosis, and facilitated diffusion (passive transport) and exocytosis and endocytosis (active transport)—move substances across membranes.

Misconceptions The rate of diffusion is faster in small cells compared to large cells. [The rate is constant; materials have to cover less distance in a small cell than a large cell.]

NM Stat Standards and Benchmarks:
Strand I: Scientific Thinking and Practice
Standard I: Understand the processes of scientific investigations and use inquiry and scientific ways
of observing, experimenting, predicting, and validating to think critically.

9-12 Benchmark III:
Use mathematical concepts, principles, and expressions to analyze data, develop models, understand patterns and relationships, evaluate findings, and draw conclusions.
Reflection:
Students will complete the readings on their own time. They will also complete the lab and quiz on their own as well. The lesson is to prepare them for the lab. In this setting, the students work they submit online on their own time is where I check for understanding. They have a 3.08 Quiz and the Lab Report to turn in. The ClassConnect time is only a small fraction of what is involved in this lesson.
