Interactive Volume and Surface Area
(formula derivation and practical problems)

Grade Level:
7
Subject:
Math
Topic:
Volume and Surface Area of rectangular prisms and cylinders
Virginia SOL 7.5 a, b
Objective:
1. The student will derive formulas for volume and surface area of rectangular prisms and cylinders.
2. The student will be able to determine volume and surface area of rectangular prisms and cylinders.
3. The student will be able to solve practical problems involving volume and/or surface area of rectangular prisms and cylinders with given mathematical formulas.
4. The student will be able to clearly explain the logic and mathematical reasoning he/she used to estimate the number of cubes in a cylindrical jar.
Prep:
1. Pre-cut nets
2. Label the boxes and candles (length, width, height, radius) in metric and English units.
3. Place dice in a glass jar and record the number. Students will use their knowledge of volume to estimate the number of cubes in the cylindrical jar. They will write a paragraph explaining the logic used for choosing the number.
Materials:
interlocking cubes (36 per student)
hand-held calculator
frozen juice concentrate container (pre-cut)
gift box (cut into a "net" and sealed up)
several rectangular prisms of various dimensions
several nochebuena candles of various dimensions (cylinders)
bubble wrap
two large packing box (from UPS or similar)
measuring tape, rulers
jar of 1cm cubed dice
