Pointillism Drawing of a Setting

Grade Level:
2
Subject:
Art/Language Arts
Topic:
Pointillism drawings connected to settings found in different versions of Cinderella stories with similar themes
Objective:
Students will choose a primary setting from one of the versions of Cinderella read and analyzed during Critical Literacy. After drawing a basic outline of the setting in pencil, students will use the pointillism technique to fill in the picture.
Other Information:
Classroom Setup-
For the following lessons, students will convene on carpet for teacher instruction and discussions/sharing. They will complete independent work at their desks which are arranged in groups to encourage peer interaction.

Evaluation-
Although this is an "art" lesson, it is tied into several other curriculum areas, so students will be evaluated in three ways when the final piece is presented:
- Formal Speaking Score based on Common Core ELA Speaking Standard (see below) 4 Advanced, 3 Proficient, 2 Approaching, 1 Below
- Reading Literature Score based on the Common Core ELA Standard related to how illustrations/settings in stories impact meaning (see below)
4 Advanced, 3 Proficient, 2 Approaching, 1 Below
- Art Score based on following check list:
Setting outline drawn in pencil?
Pointillism technique used to fill in sections using a variety of colors?

Extentions-
Students could be introduced to Monet and copy his impressionism technique to create the same setting they created using pointillism. Students could compare and contrast the mood of the two different styles and determine which better represents the theme of the story.

Adaptations-
Trajan Elementary is a full inclusion school. These lessons and expectations will be adapted for students with special physical/mental needs. Instructional assistants or teacher will assist students on an individual basis, depending on the need for modifications/accomodations.
Prep:
Teacher will bookmark George Seurat websites in order to show examples on ELMO/projector when introducing his style of art.
