Creating Grid art inspired by Sol LeWitt

Grade Level:
4
Subject:
Math
Topic:
Grids & Art
Objective:
Students will be able to connect grids to art and math. This is a pre activity to a field trip to Mass MoCA to see the Sol LeWitt exhibit. LeWitt was an artist who worked with visible grids in his art work. He also was an artist who wrote precise directions to create his art work - usually created by college art students. Directions are very mathematical- needing a tape measure to measure length, width and height of lines and placement. Students will get a chance to make their own grid art. I will give directions to fill three squares using words only. Other students can volunteer to give directions to their peers to fill in a square of the grid with mathematical directions.
Prep:
Discuss Sol LeWitt, look at reproductions of LeWiit's work, discuss MoCA and the meaning of the word contemporary,
