What Are Cookies? Cookies are tiny pieces of information that your browser adds to a special folder on your computer to let certain websites recognize you as you move from page to page within the website, most commonly used to remember login or shopping cart info. The Lesson Builder uses a session cookie to remember you as you browse the website, so that new lessons you create are added to your library and so that your searches can differentiate between your lessons and other teachers' lessons. You can still view lessons without cookies enabled. A small percent of web users choose to disable cookies since some cookies (especially third-party cookies) are used by advertisers to track browsing behavior on other websites. The Lesson Builder doesn't do that.
How Can I Enable First Party Cookies? It varies from browser to browser. Look for an 'options', 'settings', or 'tools' selection on your browser, or perform a web search for how to do it for your specific browser. You can choose to enable all cookies, enable only first party cookies, or add an exception to allow cookies from thelessonbuilder.org.
How Can I Know It's Fixed? When you think you have enabled cookies for this site, refresh the page and this message should disappear. If you still see this message after refreshing the page, cookies are still disabled for this site.

SCIENCE
Sink or Float
Grade Level:
1
Subject:
Science
Topic:
Our class is learning the concept of "floating" and "sinking" and what the words mean in real life terms through experiment.
Objective:
Students will hypothesis and display a basic understanding of density (sink or float) through a hands -on interactive experiment, Tap it board activity and a Float or Sink chart activity. Students will correctly identify which items sink or float by circling the correct choice on the teacher provider worksheet.

Prep:
Gather items for experiment, prepare worksheets, have small tank for water and paper towels for drying.
Materials:
The teacher will discuss the terms sink and float with the students. Asking the children what they think the word float means, asking the children next what the word sink means. FLOAT- item is lighter than water and stays on top
SINK-item is heavier than water and sinks to the bottom The teacher will hand out the two handmade signs that depict the words float and sink to the students along with the identification of the blue card being the card that has the word sink on it and the yellow card has the word float on it.The teacher will practice with the students holding up the right sign for the appropriate predictive action of float or sink to encourage the proper word when the students independently hold up their answers during the activity.
Using the whiteboard with the headings of Sink or Float and using the cutouts of items that will be in the experiment along with a small container that has water in it. The teacher will hold up each item asking for a prediction from the students of whether the item will sink or float. The teacher will call the students up one at a time and have them perform the dropping of the item into the water to await the results. At this time the student will reiterate on the whiteboard if the class predicted the right action and change the item to the correct position of float or sink.
After the whole group activity the class will be directed to their groups with their paraprofessionals. One group will reinforce the experiment with a Mr. Rogers website activity that will have that group using interactive visual and auditory prompts to encourage the concept of float and sink.
The other group will be using worksheets to complete their own SINK or FLOAT chart and with the teacher's assistance they will affix the answers to the worksheet while visually seeing the items on the reproduction of the worksheet on the whiteboard.
