The Declaration of Independence: A Foundation of American Ideals

Grade Level:
12
Subject:
Government
Topic:
Declaration of Independence; A New Nation Unit
Objective:
SWBAT:
o Understand how ideals and meanings change over time, as demonstrated by comparing contemporary meanings of ideals found in the Declaration of Independence, to how the founding fathers had interpreted them.
o Interpret the meaning of various sections of the Declaration and identify how those ideals have affected American history.
o Identify the influence of various philosophers’ ideas in the creation of the Declaration of Independence
o Write a well organized, 5 paragraph essay comparing the ideals found in the Declaration with their origins in philosophy and contemporary meanings, with students appropriately defending their views with evidence from primary and secondary sources.
Reflection:
This lesson worked relatively well, but it definitely needs more time for scaffolding of essay outlining and tier 2 transitional words. I spent a lot of time editing student work and allowed them to turn in a second draft for 5 extra points to their grade (100 total points). Overall, the concepts were useful for cementing some of the basic philosophical roots of Jefferson's thoughts and I was able to use the ideals within the assignment for further lessons.
