My New Lesson

Grade Level:
8
Subject:
Language Arts
Topic:
Critical Reading/Theme Identifications/Determinations
Objective:
Students should be able to find evidence from the text to identify and determine a theme for the story "The Medicine Bag" from three possible (theme) choices.
Prep:
Last week, students were put in small groups and given the instructions to read a story (Malala the Powerful) and find a possible theme. It was immediately obvious that many of my students - those who tend to have lower reading scores - were struggling with this activity.

To address this, I created a graphic organizer that the students had to fill out (working together in small groups) - one component of the organizer was to find events from the story which supported a theme. A second was to explain how this example supported. A third was to see whether or not other group members agreed with whether or not the chosen example supported the theme.

After working on this in class, there was considerable improvement. However, I feel that the students still need some additional practice.
