All Aboard the Polar Express

Grade Level:
1
Subject:
Reading/Language Arts
Topic:
All Aboard the Polar Express
Objective:
The students should be able to describe characters, settings, and major events in the story, focusing on the main character and his role in the story. The students will record character traits about the main character using a "Thinking Map." The students will be able to identify nouns and categorize them according to person, place, or thing using objects from the story.
Other Information:
DIFFERENTIATION: Terrell and Jerimiah will need labels for the "Thinking Map" activity due to their inability to write within the bubbles and their need for the visuals. Labels will also be available to Bryce if he would like to use the visuals instead of writing. Jackson does not participate in curriculum and will be unable to complete any of the activities or discussions. However, he will be included in the group reading of the story.
POSSIBLE BEHAVIORS DURING LESSON : Jerimiah may not be able to stay at the table if he hasn't had his medication for the day and will have to be removed from the table. Bryce and Terrell will need lots of prompting to answer any questions, or to participate in discussions. Terrell may get frustrated if he doesn't like the activity. Jackson will be allowed to sit on the beanbag with the assistance of a paraprofessional during this time.
