Prep:
Vocabulary Words: measure gauge cylinder (phrase); "clear and calm".
Show pictures of Hawaii and Mount Waialeale online and locate it on a map.
Questions before reading: What do you think the weather is like in Hawaii and how is it different from Barrow, Alaska?
Materials:
Making Connections; Reading Comprehension Skills and Strategies.
Lesson 2; Wet Mount Waialeale, pgs. 36- 39; TE pgs. 60 - 63.
Students will identify the main idea in each paragraph.
Students will read the captions and discuss the pictures and diagrams.
Students will ask & write questions about the diagrams and how rain gauges work; using the 5 WH ?'s Students will work in partners and share & ask their questions to the other students.
Find evidence in the text that explains how the ways of measuring rain has changed over the years.
Practice the Skill: pg. 38; Students will match the Main Idea with the paragraphs.
