Digital Equity: Each student can succeed in today's world

Subject:
Big Issues in Education
Topic:
Digital Equity - Digital Participation Gap
Objective:
Students should be able to critically think about equity issues contributing to the digital participation gap and provide possible solutions.
Other Information:
Setting: A group of 7 college freshmen, all in their first year at Webster. It is likely that many students have not heard of the digital participation gap. There is a Smart Board and projector available to use and the seating is arranged to encourage conversation.

Description of learners: Students will all be expected to present a mini lesson around the same time as this lesson, so they will likely be feeling anxious. 2 of the 7 students have at least been introduced to the topic, but the rest may not have. A few students have mentioned anxiety and an overwhelming desire to please others. All students have used a laptop or tablet during past classes. Two of the seven students have used Nearpod previously, although the rest do not seem to know what it is.

Differentiation: Nearpod presentation allows students to interact on their own devices which they are already comfortable with. They can screenshot important slides as well. Handouts are provided via Nearpod and a hardcopy. Since some students have anxiety, student names will be hidden.
Prep:
1. Create Nearpod lesson
2. Create and print "Digital Equity Doesn't Have to be Confusing" handout for after the lesson
3. Print 9 copies of the "What it Means to Have Equitable Access to Technology for Today's Students & Educators" article
4. Highlight the individual sections of the "What it Means to Have Equitable Access to Technology for Today's Students & Educators" article to be used in lesson.
5. Run through Nearpod lesson to make sure there are no errors in the lesson
6. Create master copy of "What it Means to Have Equitable Access to Technology for Today's Students & Educators" by writing notes about the key takeaways of each section and the article as a whole.
