This lesson is designed to meet Missouri Learning Standards for English Language Arts. The standards covered in this lesson plan include:
Objective 1: The students will be able to develop and apply skills to the reading process by interpreting the fairytales we have read in class and analyzing their own perceptions of each story. Students will practice observing connections between the themes of each story in relation to the time in which they were written and linking each story to instances they observe in their own lives and/or have learned of in the classroom.
Making Connections 6-12 Correlation Reading Literary 3B: Compare, contrast, and analyze relevant connections between text to world (text ideas regarding experiences in the world by demonstrating an awareness that literature reflects a cultural and historical time frame). (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 2016)
Objective 2: Approaching texts as a reader, students will be able to comprehend and interpret texts to identify themes and formulate their agreement or disagreement with the messages each story conveys to children, noting what each fairytale aims to impress on readers. In doing so, students will theorize how each fairytale could be updated and rewritten to fit more seamlessly into modern culture as opposed to the time in which it was composed.
Summarize/Theme K-5 correlation R2A: Using appropriate text, determine the theme(s) of a text and cite evidence of its development; summarize the text. (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 2016)
Objective 3: The students will be able to approach the tasks as a writer by revising and adapting the fairytale of their choice to reflect their own agenda as an individual in their writing.
Development K-5 correlation W1A, W1B, W1D, W2A, W2B, W2C: Follow a writing process to produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, style, and voice are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience; develop writing with narrative techniques. (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 2016)
Objective 4: The students will be able to approach the tasks as a reader by evaluating the quality of each text.
Revise and Edit K-5 correlation W1C: Review, revise, and edit writing with consideration for the task, purpose, and audience. (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 2016)
