Exploring Density & Viscosity
By: Sharon and Anaam

Grade Level:
8
Subject:
Chemistry
Topic:
Exploring Density and Viscosity
Objective:
Students will investigate the properties of fluids - specifically viscosity and density. This will include how density can be measured and how density and viscosity are used in our everyday world. Often times, students mistake density and viscosity, often believing they are the same concept. By exploring various properties of density and viscosity through interactive activities, students will gain the knowledge to be able to differentiate between these two similar concepts. This experiment is meant to cater to various student learning styles (i.e. visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) through hands-on activities, group discussions and in-class presentations.
Prep:
Teacher should spread out the students into groups of two for each of the stations. By separating students randomly, they will get to know each other and they may work more effectively.
Materials:
3 50 mL Graduate cylinder
2 150mL beakers
dish soap
water
corn syrup
vegetable oil
Ketchup
Mustard
sodium bicarbonate
4 teaspoons
2 200mL beaker
