M.L.P. 3 - Social Dimensions of Scientific Knowledge

Subject:
Grade 12 - Biology (University)
Topic:
Animal Biotechnology Debate (Strand D. Molecular Genetics)
Objective:
Success Criteria:
- I can analyze and discuss ethical, legal, and social issues associated with animal biotechnology.
- I can research benefits, issues, and controversies surrounding animal biotechnology.
- I can debate both sides of the issue and support opinions with research and facts.
Prep:
The use of real-life stories (for example, from newspaper articles) in science-teaching stands to increase engagement immeasurably (Reis, 2015). By introducing the topic of biotechnology through a newspaper article, the issue is made relevant to students' lives because the current and actual work being done in the field, as well as the people involved and their thought processes, are showcased. Students come away with the understanding that this technology could actually affect them or their loved ones one day. By engaging in a debate and writing a narrative text from the perspective of a scientist, they also get to develop their own opinions and thoughts as well explore those of their peers.
