A Case Study on Autosomal Recessive Inheritance

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
Biology
Topic:
Strand D: Genetic Processes
Objective:
Students will apply knowledge of a monohybrid cross to understand the rules that govern the inheritance of a single gene recessive disorder and calculate the probabilities of inheriting recessive traits and passing them on to offspring using Punnet squares and pedigree chart. This lesson will challenge students to reason the evidence of the case study and make informed decisions (scientific inquiry) in order to make connections between genetic processes (basic concept of science), infant mortality rates (social life issue), and treatment options (medical technologies).
Prep:
Print and have enough copies of case study. Could provide the online source to save paper as an alternative.
Materials:

Use projector and computer to list down classes opinions, thoughts, and answers.
