Objective:
This class will introduce to the students the various factors that affect plant growth and the challenge that lies ahead - which is to produce more food in the next 4 decades then all farmers have produced over the past 8000 years (food security).
This lesson will be used as an introduction to the activity "Feeding the Future - Plant Growth Factors."
Prep:
Create a PowerPoint that will deliver information to the students about the various factors that effect plant growth and food security, create student notes for the PowerPoint, gather necessary materials for the activity, photocopy feeding the future activity, photocopy student notes.
Materials:
A variety of vegetable seeds (tomato, basil, chives, cucumber, beans, herbs, etc...), potting soil, pots, water, fertilizers with varying levels of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen, soil acidifier (limestone or sulfur), masking tape for labels, organic matter (such as peat moss or manure), projector, PowerPoint
