Blood Typing and Story-Telling

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
University Biology
Topic:
Stand D. Genetic Processes
Objective:
The objective of this activity is how to use genetics to better understand our-selves and our personal histories and backgrounds. The best way to do this is through story-telling from a social and cultural perspective and combining it with curriculum expectations and the genetic processes stand of grade 11 biology.
Prep:
Chosen voluntarily, 3-4 students will identify their blood type using a finger prick, or Diabetics Pen. Each student will place on drop of blood in 3 different wells. The wells are then treated with antibody A, B and Rh factor serum to determine the blood type. After the blood type is determined all students are given chrome books and various internet resources such as ancestry.ca to figure out their story or their classmates story and how that may be different or similar to their own.
Students can then follow up with questions on the Human Genome Project and how it has allowed genetic research to move from an analytical science into a social/cultural one.
**Note that students who DO NOT wish to participate in the lesson i.e. the finger prick or feel squeamish DO NOT have to under any circumstances.**
