Human Rights vs. Human Health

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
SBI3U_Biology (University Prep)
Topic:
What Can WHO Do?
Societal Needs, Human Rights, and Pathogensis.
Overall Expectation: A1 & E1 / Specific Expectation: A1.1, A1.7, & E1.2 (OME, 2008, p.48 & 56)
... could also be utilized for the SNC4M Pathogen and/or Public Health units
Objective:
In this lesson students will "assess how societal needs...lead to [or are impacted by] scientific and technological developments", or the lack thereof (OME, 2008, p. 56-E1.2). The goal here is to have students consider the potential negation of human rights in light of the causes of an endemic. Students will further consider Public Health efforts and whether these are sufficient in addressing both the pathogen and what they feel are the root causes of the disease in question (i.e. infrastructure, lack of technology / bio-med-tech, socio-political issues, nutrition, climate, etc...) While this draws on the idea that "[a] healthy environment is the foundation of a sustainable society and economy" (Edgar, 2007, p. 29), this further requires students to consider the direct health implications that face those from lower socio-economic and vulnerable groups. The lesson is designed to allow student to work on their scientific research skills and utilize their findings to formulate the correlation between human rights and a human's ability to prevent / contend with disease.
