Objective:
The objective of this lesson is to reintroduce students to the term and practice of "Sustainability". Students will have the opportunity to learn, through a hands on activity, the concept of the tragedy of the commons. The lesson will serve to demonstrate the impact of human activity, specifically over agricultural practices, and how it affects the sustainability of environmental ecosystems for our future generations. Our guiding question will be: Does our society look to short-term benefits without a view of the long-term consequences?
Prep:
Make sure to photocopy the required papers as mentioned below in the materials
Materials:
- 30 copies of data table for the "Reach for the Corn" Game #1
- 30 copies of data table for the "Reach for the Corn" Game #2
- 30 copies of exit card assessment
- 30 chopsticks (one per student)
- 6 dishes (these will serve as the "crops")
- 6 cans of mini corns (1 box per group)
