Subject:
Biology (SBI3C)
Topic:
Strand F : Plants in the Natural environment
Objective:
OVERALL EXPECTATION:
F2. investigate some of the factors that affect plant growth

SPECIFIC EXPECTATION:
F2.3 investigate how chemical compounds (e.g., fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides) and physical factors (e.g., amount of sun and water, quality of soil, pH of soil) affect plant growth [PR, AI]
Other Information:
This lesson was integrated by reading “Green your School with Composting Magic” by Cathy Nesbitt. This was integrated by introducing composting to the students. Students can observe the differences in composting versus non-composting and observe the many factors that contribute to successful composting such as temperature and moisture content. With the differences seen in plant growth, students not only learn the benefits of composting but also learn that using natural resources can better the environment and better their health. Therefore, with the little action of composting, students will learn that they can make a difference in their environment and their community.
Prep:
Ensure students have a strong understanding of plant anatomy, terminology and ability to apply their knowledge to real life situations.
