My New Lesson

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
Biology
Topic:
Primary and Secondary Succession
Objective:
-Understand how Primary and Secondary Succession Occurs (Factors & Process)
-Understand if Human activity can lead to succession through pollution (Air/Water/Landfills)
-Allow to student become more aware of the impact that we are having on the plant...Practical way to minimize our negative impacts.
Other Information:
SBI3U: Biology, Grade 11-University Preparation
Strand: F. Plants: Anatomy, Growth, and Function

Overall Expectations:
F3. demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of vascular plants, including their structures, internal transport systems, and their role in maintaining biodiversity.

Specific Expectations:
F3.5 explain the process of ecological succession, including the role of plants in maintaining biodiversity and the survival of organisms after a disturbance to an ecosystem that any organism within that ecosystem will become extinct)

C) As I read through the article the there was great emphasis on basic human rights. It made think about how some parts of the world are do not have them and how privileged we have clear water/air and the ability to recycle-but more than often neglect these rights and waste them away. We bring upon ourselves the desolation of environments and ecosystem through deforestation, landfills and water/air pollution. This got me thinking was it possible that humans could cause Primary/Secondary Succession through our daily activities.
I want to challenge my students to think if Succession is a natural process, should we even care about how we treat the environment (of course!) but more than that, how can we as class decrease "Human Factor Succession" so other generations (who are just as entitled to these basic rights) can have them as well.

D) Through brainstorming and cooperative learning, they should come up with small efforts to decrease pollution-ultimate looking into reusable sources, in hopes to improve the environment, decrease intervention funding and help with prevention.

E) The article is used as means of discussion--a hook at the beginning of the lesson.
