Cancer, as an outcome of 9/11

Grade Level:
10
Subject:
Tissues, organs, and systems of living things
Topic:
Cancer, as an outcome of 9/11
Objective:
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the causes of cancer and understand that cancer is not necessarily always genetic and that it could result from explosions such as 9/11. Part of the grade 10 biology unit studies cells, cell division of cancerous vs. non-cancerous cells. Further, part of the curricula entails technologies that can be used to diagnose or prevent cancer such as pre-screening devices. Students will watch a video called: "Stalked by death: Struggle isn’t over for 9/11 first responders." and further study various technology that are used to detect cancer. Students will use this video to describe the importance of medical devices and imaging technologies by researching an individual that has been diagnosed with cancer as an outcome of 9/11. Further, students will be required to present their research to the class.

The Specific Expectations could be linked to Cancer in such a way:
-B1.2/B1.3: Students are to choose an individual that has cancer as an outcome of 9/11 thus, have to elaborate on treatments which are not limited to technological devices, these could include medicinal treatments as well.

Rationale: The article discusses the struggles of a teacher during the event of 9/11 however; I found it quite challenging to connect the overall message of this article to the science curriculum. The only thing that came to mind were the survivors and as I was researching I came across Ground Zero Illness which is to this day, an ongoing issue of 9/11 survivors. I found the biology curriculum for the grade 10 very relevant to this topic as it related to cancer.
