Is the world big enough for all our feet?

Grade Level:
9
Subject:
Sustainable Ecosystems and Human Activity
Topic:
Is the world big enough for all our feet? - ecological footprint
Objective:
-Students need to realize that over consumption (of food, shelter, energy) is poisoning our planet and thus; teacher will introduce topic of ecological footprint.
-Students should be able to assess the effects of their lifestyle on various industries, globally and in turn how this affects the environment they live, determining their ecological footprint.
-Students should be able to compare their ecological footprint (obtained from a given website) to that of individuals in different countries and identify ways in which they can reduce the impact on their environment.

Rationale: I believe students as early as in grade 9 need to realize how their actions affect our environment and how there are real facts and statistics related to their consumptions as they each leave their ecological footprint on our planet. The idea of consuming more than we can afford is directly relevant to the resources we are using on our planet and nature thus it's important for students to be conscious of what they're using and who they're using and how in turn this affects our country and our planet.
