Nelson Mandela Biography & Expository Writing Introduction

Grade Level:
3
Subject:
Language Arts
Topic:
Nelson Mandela, Civil Rights, and Expository Writing.

In this activity, Seamus will read and interact with a short biography on Nelson Mandela. He will examine the importance of chronology, text structure, and verb tense in understanding the story. Seamus will also encounter a new set of vocabulary words, related to civil rights. In the second part of the lesson, Seamus will apply the concept of cause and effect to the Nelson Mandela Biography. He will briefly reflect on how Nelson Mandela disagreed with Apartheid and wanted to change it, and consider a time he has disagreed with something and wanted change. Seamus will then brainstorm what information he now knows about Nelson Mandela, and create an outline and rough draft for his next writing assignment. Seamus will use transition words to assure his outline is smooth and logical. This lesson is important because it begins a unit on expository writing and civil rights. It is the first of several lessons in the unit. In all partner activities, I will scribe for Seamus, as much of this lesson is a shared reading and writing exercise.
