Geography Journal for Nicole See's Class

Intra-Personal Geography Journal Lesson

Grade Level:
2
Subject:
Social Studies
Topic:
Intra-Personal Learning Activity/ Writing an Essay or a Journal on Geography
Objective:
Students should be able to understand geography and how different climates in the world affect the population. Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of weather and climate changes in a journal or essay format. Students will also draw a picture of their climate to support their understanding. Students will understand how to introduce a topic and use facts as evidence to support their topic. They will use the internet to research different geographic regions and they will demonstrate technology skills in using databases. Students will participate in a group setting in explaining why they chose that region and how it differs from the region they currently live in. This activity will incorporate technology, research skills, writing, and group discussion skills.
Other Information:
Readings will be based on what the students find on the database. They will research their desired region and write what findings they discovered into a journal or an essay format.
New vocabulary will be "geography," and "climate." They will then compare and contrast their findings in the large discussion area.
Extension will be next week when students research a new geographic region and they will draw connections between both regions in their journal or essay.
Only link needed will be the database link, which is found on the internet. This technology will be needed in the children's research findings.
Note: Two educational handouts on geography and climate changes are located at the bottom. They are word searches and help students understand how climates are different in regions and how our actions impact the climate. Have them work on this in their independent time when they are finished with their drawing and writings.
Public Notes:
Assess the student's progress as they talk about why they chose the region that they did. Have students work independently, and allow students to work in quiet corners of the classroom. Have the students document their personal growth in their journal when the assignment is over.
Reflection:
This assignment is going to help intra-personal learners thrive. The independent work and drawing stimulate their imagination. They also learn to draw connections between areas. They will participate in a class discussion and they will provide their findings in a written format. Students will learn to cooperate with others and they will learn to compare and contrast different climates in the world.
